The storywalk has been updated! The currently featured book is The Night Walk by Marie Dorleans:
Mama opened our bedroom door, interrupting the night-time darkness.
“Wake up, you two,” she whispered. “Let’s go, so we get there on time.”
In the middle of the night, two children are awakened by their parents to begin a special adventure. The family steps outside into a beautiful summer’s night. They walk from the sleeping village through the dark landscapes of the countryside, into a forest world of midnight blue.
But where are they going, and will they get there on time? I don’t want to spoil the ending, so I will neither confirm nor deny that the best time to take your kiddos on this storywalk would be about 10-15 minutes before sunrise…

Director’s Notes:
- This is the last week of our summer reading program. Next week, we’ll figure out just how many hours have been read by the kiddos and how many books have been read by the adults. I can tell you in advance, though, that it is a LOT. I hope to see a lot of our adult summer reading participants at our ice cream social tomorrow evening at 6:30, because we have a lot to celebrate.
- Miss Debbie will be at Picnic in the Park on Saturday from 10am to 3pm collecting as many pieces for our Douglas Undivided mural as possible. Come see her and check out the rest of the event as well! There’ll be food trucks, fire trucks, games, face painting, inflatables, barrel train rides, and over 30 vendor booths to explore.
- Also happening this Saturday, Gretel Anspach from The Massachusetts Master Gardener’s Association is coming to present to the SFPL gardeners about seed saving. The program runs from 10:30-12:30. No registration required.
- The Friends of the Library are currently collecting donations for their fall online auction, but I also want to remind everyone that you can join the Friends of the Library all year around. It doesn’t have to be right after the annual mailer. You can print the form from the Friends webpage (or come to the Library and get one) or just donate through paypal.
- Saturday, August 29th is our next meeting of the Simon Fairfield Sleuths. Call us to register if you want to help solve a murder mystery! More information here.
- Lastly, I want to invite any an all literary youth to join us in reading The Infinite Sadness of Small Appliances by Glenn Dixon and come to Book Nerds to talk about it on September 19 at 10 am. The scifi book club read this short, quirky novel about Scout the roomba and her fellow sentient appliances working together to defend their aging homeowner from the Grid, and it stands out as one of those stories that longs to be shared. It draws heavily from classics like Fahrenheit 451, draws direct inspiration from To Kill a Mockingbird, and deals with the theme of artificial intelligence in ways about which everyone should be thinking… I’ll buy donuts.
