Children’s Programs

The Douglas Public Library has many children’s programs available for your child(ren) to participate in throughout the year.  Below is a list of programs that are currently offered and a brief description. There are other programs offered as stand alone programs throughout the year. You can check out our calendar to see what’s offered throughout the year. If you have any questions or would like to sign up for any program you can call or email me (dsoderman@cwmars.org or 508-476-2695).

Storytime is offered 4 times a year :

  • Winter – January through February (7 weeks)
  • Spring – April through June (7 weeks)
  • Summer – July through August (6 weeks)
  • Fall – September through November (7 weeks)

Schedule currently offered is:

  • Monday 10 AM – ages 18 mos. – 2
  • Monday 1 PM – ages 3 – 5
  • Monday 3 PM – ages 4 – 7
  • Wednesday 10 AM – ages 2 – 4

(Please note that these ages are just guidelines, I always try to accommodate parents schedules and will place children in the group that works best for them.)

Summer Reading is offered every summer and typically runs July through August for 6 weeks.  Wednesday’s programming is at 10:30 AM and is reserved for children grades K – 5.  Children who are signed up for storytime are invited to the Wednesday program if age appropriate.

Summer Storytimes are Monday 10 AM for ages 18 months to 2, Monday 1 PM for ages 3 to 5, and Tuesday 6 PM for ages 4 to 7.

Lego Club is offered to students in grades K-5.  There are two groups: Lego Club I and Lego Club II.  We meet 10 times throughout the school year.  Typically one Wednesday each month, sometimes two from 3:30 to 4:30 PM.  I would add a third group if interest warrants it.

Book Clubs:

  • Young Reader’s Club – Grades K – 2
  • Book Bunch – Grades 2 – 4
  • Book Wizards – Grades 5 – 7
  • Teen Book Club – Grades 8 – 12

1000 Books Before Kindergarten – The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless–just read any book with your child until you get to 1000! Seem hard? It’s not! Just 1 book a night is 1,095 books over 3 years, and it doesn’t have to be a different book every night. You can count the same title more than once! And honestly, every child has that one book that they want to read time and time again. Most children don’t start kindergarten until 5, so there’s plenty of time.

Music and Movement with Miss Deb (Hudgins) – Every other Tuesday at 11:30, Miss Deb gets us up moving.  Some of the fun things we do are listen to stories, play musical instruments, play games, and dance.

Reading to Gabby – Third Thursday of the month.  Participants sign up for a 15 minute time slot: 5:45, 6:00, 6:15, or 6:30.  Gabby listens to the stories that are read to her without criticism and this is extremely helpful for those who struggle with reading.  Participants love to read to her and will sign up for another available time slot.  They read a book of their choice (it can be one from home or one from here).
